William Jasper Downey, 38th Alabama Infantry

My great great grandfather, William Jasper Downey, fought in the Battle of Franklin with the 38th Alabama Infantry. He survived the war and returned home to Butler, Alabama for the rest of his life.

He is buried at Stateline Methodist Cemetery outside of (what used to be) Crandall, MS- which is near the Alabama line (near Quitman, MS).

You can view photos here of his grave, his enlistment papers, etc.

  1. Leland Hamner says:

My ancestor was also in 38th. I don’t think the regiment was engage at Franklin. Can’t recall reason but they were delayed in arriving. Good thing for them.
I’m gg grandson of Lt Henley Hamner, Co F, 38th Ala. Vols.
